The SBCS BICO Bike Club hosted its final event on Friday and despite almost an inch of rain, youth still found a way to be productive. 15 bicycles repaired, 22 adults and youth smiling and learning, 24 hot dogs eaten, and at least 200 laps ridden around the gym.
On Friday May 11th the BICO Club traveled to Gunpowder Falls for a canoe trip. This was the third in a series of water/canoe outings to help students increase their comfort on the water and build skills. Canoeing on a river was different from previous adventures because the current, or downstream movement of the water, caused the boat to move even if no one was paddling!
First through fourth graders were fortunate to learn traditional American dances and songs and have the experience of holding a fiddle when fiddler Steve Hickman came to SBCS. Ms. DeLaura assisted by calling the dances.
First graders watched chicks hatch and then got to interact with the days' old chicks!
The boys' lacrosse team makes it two years in a row as Baltimore City Parks and People Middle Grade champions! Congratulations to the players and the coaches.
Our sixth graders spent an amazing week at NorthBay, living in cabins and stretching their comfort zones. Check out these pictures!
Initiatives are one tool we use at SBCS to help classrooms grow into being a crew. Activities such as Groundhog, in which you keep each other "safe" from the hawk by hiding in a decreasing number of hula hoops or "burrows", challenge crew members to work together, problem solve, and communicate effectively all while having a memorable experience.
In Fitness & Adventure class 3rd grade students investigated volleying - or keeping an object in the air. We play lots games and activities in the gym to grow skills and knowledge about volleying.
The BICO Club spent the day at Middle Branch Park learning more about how to canoe. Participants learned how to adjust a life-jacket, find the right size paddle, and enter and exit a boat safely. In addition, youth spent over 3.5 hours on the water in canoes honing their paddling skills.
Sparkly Day, Silly Hat Day, Twin Day and Sports Team Day!
